About Lanchester Literature
Lanchester Literature is a periodic writing competition for local writers of all ages and experience levels.
Every story starts somewhere, and this is a space for the beginnings, middles, and everything in between that Lanchester’s own writers have been carrying around. Each issue brings a new theme and a prompt to write to: short stories, poetry, or micro-fiction, whichever suits what you want to say.
How it works
Each issue carries a call for entries, with that issue’s theme and prompt. You’ve got a few weeks to send in your piece, in one of three categories:
- Short story — up to 1,500 words
- Poetry — up to 40 lines
- Micro-fiction — up to 300 words
Entries are read and judged, and the best of each round are published or highlighted in a future issue of the Village Voice, alongside the call for the next theme — so there’s always something new to write for. Space in the Village Voice is at a premium, and so selected stories will be posted to this blog as well.
Who can enter
Anyone living in or connected to Lanchester. One entry per person, per theme — pick whichever category fits what you want to write. All genres are welcome, but as the Village Voice is read by the whole village, we ask that entries keep language and content suitable for a family readership.
Why we started this
Villages are full of stories that never get written down, and writers who’ve never had anywhere to send their work. Lanchester Literature is a small, low-pressure way to change that — a reason to write something this month, and a place for it to be read.
